NV Energy and CSN partner to create state-of-the-art worker safety training

LAS VEGAS, May 7, 2014 – The College of Southern Nevada and longtime supporter NV Energy will dedicate a classroom and labs designed for occupational safety at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13 on CSN’s Charleston campus.

NV Energy and the NV Energy Foundation are strong supporters of CSN. Together, they fund 120 annual scholarships for CSN students. Most recently, the NV Energy Foundation provided a $50,000 gift to support CSN’s safety education program. The funds will be used to update the safety labs and provide training equipment and materials to future students.

“We are very excited about continuing our partnership with NV Energy,” said CSN President Michael D. Richards. “Because of their support, we will be creating a state-of-the-art educational experience for our students.”

The classroom and labs, operated by the CSN Division of Workforce and Economic Development (DWED), will be used for OSHA workplace safety classes as well as the division’s new Facility Maintenance and Operations Training Program, which is funded through the U.S. Department of Labor. The adjoining laboratories have been equipped with over $1 million in hands-on technology and equipment to provide real-world experiences for students.

“We are proud to add another aspect to our partnership with CSN,” said NV Energy President Paul Caudill. “Our support of the OSHA classroom and labs reflects our company’s strong commitment to workplace safety.”

Dan Gouker, CSN’s DWED executive director, said the gift will greatly enhance the classroom and lab experience for students. “You simply cannot teach safety out of a book,” he said. “You must have the equipment to support the theory.”

A formal dedication of the classroom and labs will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, on the Charleston campus, located at 6375 West Charleston Blvd., Building M, classroom 103. Attendees will have an opportunity to tour the labs and view demonstrations of the educational equipment and teaching aids.
