First-Ever Mentoring Matters Summit Calls Attention to Nevada’s Need for More Mentors

Community groups, legislators and mentors come together to grow state’s mentoring capacity

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2017 –  Community leaders are calling upon the Southern Nevada community to celebrate National Mentoring Month and attend Mentoring Matters, a first-ever summit designed to increase Nevada’s mentoring capacity and encourage more people to become mentors.

Scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, this event will bring state lawmakers, public agencies, nonprofits, mentors and mentees together to help them connect, share resources and discuss how to grow Nevada’s youth mentoring programs.

“There is no question that many of today’s young people would benefit greatly by having a mentor. The evidence is clear: Mentoring leads to higher graduation rates, healthier relationships and increased college enrollment,” said State Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson, who has authored legislation to create a Nevada Advisory Commission on Mentoring. “This important event highlights mentoring as an effective strategy to help Nevada’s youth succeed.”

CSN has its own mentoring program, Bump Up, which partners minority students with mentors from the college and the surrounding community. Early evidence shows that those who participate in the program are more likely to remain in college than those who do not.

The Mentoring Matters Summit, sponsored by CSN in collaboration with the Nevada Black Legislative Caucus and the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus, the Clark County School District and Communities in Schools will help connect various public and nonprofit programs throughout Southern Nevada with one another.

Both mentors and mentees will tell their stories of how mentoring can have a powerful impact.
