Southern Nevada is experiencing this year’s first prolonged heatwave as temperatures are expected to be significantly above average and potentially record breaking.
The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning through 9 p.m. Saturday, June 19
What does an Excessive Heat Warning mean?
Extreme heat is likely for numerous days
Limited overnight relief with warm nights
Severe health impacts possible – dehydration and heat illness
What precautions should we take?
Stay out of the sun as much as possible
If working outdoors, take frequent rest breaks in the shade or air conditioning
Drink plenty of fluids
Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
Use sunscreen
Check on relatives and neighbors
Never leave children or pets in the car
In addition to these safeguards, it’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone overcome by heat should immediately move to a cool location and hydrate. Heat stroke is an emergency – Call 911 for immediate assistance.
