The Nevada Promise Scholarship is a unique scholarship established by the Nevada Legislature for Nevada high school graduates to attend community college. As a last-dollar scholarship, the Nevada Promise Scholarship can cover up to three years of tuition and other mandatory fees not covered by other gift aid.
Mentors are an important part of the Nevada Promise Scholarship and a strong support structure is key to help students find success. Meet the mentors who help provide support and guidance to students receiving the Nevada Promise scholarship at CSN.
Ned Stoughton, M.D., M.P.H. is a retired doctor with specialties in dermatology and palliative care. He is from Berkeley, California and attended UC Davis as an undergrad and Duke University for medical school. He received post-graduate training in dermatology at UC Irvine and palliative care at UC San Diego.
Stoughton spent eight years as a medical officer in the U.S. Air Force and practiced as a civilian in Hawaii, San Diego and Las Vegas. He is retired and has mentored high school and college students for three years.
“Mentoring in the Nevada Promise Scholarship program has been very meaningful for me and also a lot of fun,” said Stoughton. “Since the students that I mentor are fifty years younger than me, they give me an up-to-date view of our society and the challenges that students face today which are very different than those that I faced.”
CSN is seeking mentors of all backgrounds who are willing to give 3-5 hours each semester to guide the future of Nevada. Learn more at csn.edu/promise/become-a-mentor.
