Short films produced by the community college’s students topped the regional competition
LAS VEGAS, June 27, 2017 – College of Southern Nevada students won fourteen Emmy Awards this week, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Pacific Southwest Chapter announced.
“This is a great testament to the students’ hard work and the tremendous job done by their instructors,” said Michael Spangler, dean of the School of Advanced and Applied Technologies. “It may be time for a new trophy case.”
CSN students were nominated for 26 Emmys this year. The fourteen wins were the most CSN has ever won and the most by any college in the competition. In all, CSN student filmmakers have taken home 26 student Emmys and have been nominated 42 times in the last three years.
“This is an incredible accomplishment by our students,” said John C. Aliano, director of CSN’s Videography and Film program. “Competing against two- and four-year public and private institutions and being named one of the best shows how hard the students work.”
CSN students are required in many film and videography classes to produce a short film. The program puts a heavy emphasis on practical production skills, focusing on getting graduates into the industry. Six years ago, Aliano created the CSN Short Film Showcase, held each fall to show off the films to the public. The CSN Sixth Annual Short Film Showcase is scheduled for 6:30pm Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 in the Horn Theater on CSN’s North Las Vegas Campus. The event is free and open to the public.
