CSN Veterinary Technology Program Gains High-Tech Equipment

A new CT Scanner will aid students in diagnosing serious medical issues

LAS VEGAS, March 29, 2016 – The College of Southern Nevada’s Veterinary Technology program has acquired a state-of-the-art Computed Tomography device, also known as a CT scanner. It is one of only two in use in Nevada veterinary clinics, and members of the media are invited to see it in action.

The machine is used to scan an animal and create three-dimensional images in a computer. Veterinarians can then better assess medical problems, such as tumors, and design treatments for them.

Veterinary Technology Program Director Dennis Olsen says the new CT Scanner will allow students to use the latest technology in the field.

“This is incredibly valuable to me as a surgeon,” said Program Director Dennis Olsen. “I can see a much greater level of detail than I ever could before.”

CSN’s program operates a fully functional veterinary clinic. Local veterinarians who encounter medical problems they are sometimes not equipped to deal with often refer patients to CSN’s clinic.

In addition to being used by the veterinary program, the fully portable CT scanner will also be available to CSN’s Radiation Therapy program. It will help better detect and isolate cancers and allow therapists to design more effective treatments.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s human or veterinary. We can all benefit from this new equipment,” Olsen said.

Members of the media can watch the CT scanner being used to isolate a tumor in a cat’s ear on April 14. Olsen plans to perform surgery on the cat that morning, using the images he acquires via the scanner.
