Excessive Heat Warning

Southern Nevada is experiencing this year’s first prolonged heatwave as temperatures are expected to be significantly above average and potentially record breaking.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning through 9 p.m. Saturday, June 19

What does an Excessive Heat Warning mean?
Extreme heat is likely for numerous days
Limited overnight relief with warm nights
Severe health impacts possible – dehydration and heat illness

What precautions should we take?
Stay out of the sun as much as possible
If working outdoors, take frequent rest breaks in the shade or air conditioning
Drink plenty of fluids
Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
Use sunscreen
Check on relatives and neighbors
Never leave children or pets in the car

In addition to these safeguards, it’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone overcome by heat should immediately move to a cool location and hydrate. Heat stroke is an emergency – Call 911 for immediate assistance.

For additional weather updates and advisories, follow the National Weather Service — Las Vegas. If you have questions regarding heat safety, contact CSN Environmental Health & Safety.

Stay safe and cool!

Classified Employee of the Month- June 2021- Erol Welshons

Erol Welshons is a Shop Supervisor in the Facilities Management department located on the CSN Charleston campus. He was nominated for Classified Employee of the Month in June 2021 by his colleague Don Boyer in part because of his “can-do” attitude. Boyer describes him as a great mentor and leader, always willing to share his vast knowledge with his team.

“Erol sets the tone for his team,” wrote Boyer. “He always comes into the shop with a cheerful, positive attitude.” Welshons adapted to meet the changing needs of the college during the pandemic and helped inspire his team to remain focused to ensure compliance with evolving health and safety guidelines.

Welshons completed numerous campus enhancements during the pandemic that will help students, faculty and staff transition back to in-person learning. He oversaw the remodel of sixteen classrooms, 10 office spaces and associated common areas during the pandemic. And he helped make campus parking lots safer by updating the paint for over thirty speed bumps and pedestrian points of entry.

Welshons is described as an exceptional representative of the College of Southern Nevada. “He maintains a high level of professionalism when dealing with external vendors, contractors and the general public,” said Boyer. Congratulations Erol Welshons on a job well done!

Would you like to nominate a colleague for Classified Employee of the Month?

It’s easy to recognize an exceptional colleague for a job well done. Please submit the Nomination Form to Connie Jo Harris by June 18. During telecommuting, please submit the Nomination Form to Connie.Harris@csn.edu. Do not send through interoffice mail.

The Classified Employee of the Month will receive $200, a certificate, a designated parking spot (when we return to campus) and be recognized on a plaque at all three campuses.
The purpose of this award is to recognize exceptional classified employees who stand out among the many employees that consistently perform at a high level. Please nominate those individuals that are thriving in the work at home environment.

Ranking and selection by the council members is “blind.” The employee’s name and work area on the nomination form will be hidden from the council, thus we are asking for the nominator’s cooperation in not mentioning names and work areas in the narrative, when possible. Nominees who are not selected as the CEOM, will be considered for two additional months. As the recipient of the nomination forms.

CSN Leadership Academy Applications Available

Prospective class members are now being solicited for the CSN Leadership Academy Fall 2021 (starting in September)  and Spring 2022  (starting in February) cohorts. The personal and professional enrichment program is open to all classified employees, administrative faculty, adjunct and full-time teaching faculty. It utilizes the well-regarded 7 Habits of Highly Effective People model of principle-based leadership, and concentrates on proactivity, strengthening time management, ethical decision-making, and communication competency.

Interested individuals are asked to complete the Academy application. At this point, the program has been extended for up to 90 more participants (and a three-semester delivery cycle through the Spring 2022) so it is advantageous to apply quickly.

Unless otherwise indicated on the form or in the e-mail submission, the applicant will first be considered for the Fall 2021 program cycle.  If a large volume of interest exists, all accepted prospects beyond the 30-person class limit will be placed on a Wait List. Those wait-listed will be informed of their acceptance into the Academy, and given the opportunity to participate in the next semester–space permitting.

Participants will be selected based on:

  • Date of submission, to determine priority order
  • Category (Classified, administration or faculty)
  • Supervisor’s permission.

Dr. Zaragoza wishes this opportunity to be available to all who apply, and can be accommodated. Supervisors are, therefore, encouraged to offer their support to applicants.

Notification of acceptance, and cohort placement, will be confirmed by June 2021.

Please contact program director Dr. Gillian Silver-Rodis@csn.edu, for more information.
