Nevada Promise mentor Dave Wise is retired from a 36-year career of service with the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Government Accountability Office. His years of service included tours in Vietnam, Laos and Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He has been in Las Vegas for approximately two years.
Wise has a bachelor of arts degree in political science and a master of public administration (both from the University of Pittsburgh) and has two adult sons with his loving wife. One of his sons serves in the Air Force in Oklahoma and the other is in an engineering Ph.D. program at the University of California, Berkeley.
“As someone who completed all my education in public schools, I believe strongly in the opportunities that CSN and the Nevada Promise scholarship provide for students,” he said. “Many students are the first in their families to attend college. Within the Nevada Promise mentor program, I am happy for the opportunity to be a resource for students in whatever way is helpful to them.”

Nevada Promise mentor Rolando M. Mosqueda is the Associate Vice President for Procurement and Auxiliary Services at the College of Southern Nevada. In this role, Rolando is responsible for purchasing, contracting, food services, bookstore operations, print management and several additional College wide functions.
Mosqueda obtained his undergraduate degree from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas and graduated from the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV. He has been with CSN for seven years and previously held a position at UNLV.
Mosqueda enjoys spending time with his four wonderful children and will be a grandparent for the first time later this year. He is inspired the potential he sees in local high school students.
“The opportunity and privilege of mentoring in the Nevada Promise Scholarship Program has confirmed for me the amazing energy and limitless potential of high school students in the Las Vegas area,” he said. “Students I have mentored are insightful, engaged, motivated, and extremely gracious for the brief time we interact as mentor and mentee.”
Mosqueda goes so far as to credit his time as a mentor in the Nevada Promise Scholarship Program for professional and personal growth. “My sincere hope is that the encouragement and guidance I provide positively impacts the educational journey of my mentees,” he said. “The Nevada Promise Scholarship Program is a unique and indispensable platform to directly improve the readiness of aspiring college students, and I am so grateful for the honor to participate.”

Nevada Promise mentor Marc Mialon immigrated from France 20 years ago and is now a proud U.S. citizen. He earned a bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration in France and first came to the United States for an internship. Mialon was drawn to the American working style. “I liked the work ethic, my job and the opportunities available to me so I stayed and applied for citizenship,” he said.
He has worked at Essilor for 20 years holding positions in finance and marketing. “I have learned all aspects of marketing from product launch to acquiring new business,” he said. “I earned the opportunity to lead a marketing team and was later promoted to Director of Business Development for the Retail Division.”
Mialon eventually transitioned to the role of Senior Sales Director leading a team of sales managers and consultants. He is the proud father of a 9-year-old son and enjoys cooking and staying fit.
“A great friend of mine introduced me to the Nevada Promise mentor program because she knew I wanted to give back,” said Mialon. “Life is meaningless if you are not involved or giving your time to help others.
“I believe that we all have a duty to give back and be thankful for what we have,” he continued. “We should give some of our time and knowledge to others in guiding them to do better, be better.”

CSN Nevada Promise mentor Paula Michniewicz has a Bachelor of Science degree in Outdoor Recreation and a master’s degree in Education. She has spent the last 16 years helping faculty design and develop online courses and enhance student learning using technology. Prior to that she worked seasonally for 13 years as she traveled the United States, including Maine, Arizona, Montana, and Alaska.
“Mentoring with the Nevada Promise program has kept me connected with the youth of the 21st century,” she said. “I was lucky to have two siblings older than me who helped me in college. I want to help the first-year students to become life-long learners.”

Ned Stoughton, M.D., M.P.H. is a retired doctor with specialties in dermatology and palliative care. He is from Berkeley, California and attended UC Davis as an undergrad and Duke University for medical school. He received post-graduate training in dermatology at UC Irvine and palliative care at UC San Diego.
Stoughton spent eight years as a medical officer in the U.S. Air Force and practiced as a civilian in Hawaii, San Diego and Las Vegas. He is retired and has mentored high school and college students for three years.
“Mentoring in the Nevada Promise Scholarship program has been very meaningful for me and also a lot of fun,” said Stoughton. “Since the students that I mentor are fifty years younger than me, they give me an up-to-date view of our society and the challenges that students face today which are very different than those that I faced.”

Jay Jackson moved to Las Vegas over 20 years ago from Washington, D.C. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Management Information Systems from UNLV and his job was in sales for Xerox Corporation. He learned all about CSN when the college was a client in this role. It inspired him to pursue his passion for education. He became an Algebra teacher at Western High School and is currently as the Assistant Director of Deferred Maintenance and an Adjunct Professor at CSN.
“Being a Promise Mentor allows me to interface with the future leaders of our community,” said Jackson. “Helping and learning from these young students is refreshing and always leaves me full of energy. It is a great reminder of what is important and why we do the work we do.”

Nevada Promise mentor Claire White is the Educational Programs Manager at The Mob Museum in Downtown Las Vegas and has served as a mentor for the program since 2018. White has worked in museums for 15 years, including the former Liberace Museum and the Nantucket Whaling Museum in Massachusetts.
White earned a history degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a master’s degree in public history from the University of South Carolina. She began her museum career at the Liberace Museum while still an undergraduate at UNLV.
As The Mob Museum’s Educational Programs Manager, she develops and facilitates educational programs including the Museum’s classroom outreach presentations, which introduce students from second grade through college to topics in history and forensic science. In her free time, she enjoys road trips, hiking, and trying new restaurants.
White sees participating as a mentor for Nevada Promise recipients as an opportunity to give back to the Las Vegas community. “As a CCSD and UNLV graduate, I know that navigating the transition to college can be challenging, especially when parents and other family members may not have attended college themselves,” she said. “I think creating additional support for students, particularly first-generation, is so important for continued success. And programs like this help build relationships that ultimately strengthen our community.”

CSN Nevada Promise mentor Jerrold Azevedo holds a master’s degree in Nursing/Education. He has worked as a nurse in many clinical settings including flight/level one trauma, emergency, mental health and hospice. Azevedo came to CSN in 2018 and has been teaching for over 20 years. He now manages the nursing labs and the simulation unit of the CSN nursing department.
Azevedo is the Vice President of the Simulation Consortium of Nevada, Director, Summerlin HOA and is in the working group for the development of Operations Specialist Advanced Certification (SSH). His wife of more than 30 years is a nursing instructor at CSN.

Erin Windsor earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Texas Tech University. She was a Howard Hughes Institute Undergraduate Research Scholar and the mentorship in that program opened the door for her to discover her future career. She later joined the MD Anderson Cancer Center UT Health Graduate School of Biomedical Science.
“I was lucky enough to have two mentors to see me through challenges in my life, like the death of my mother,” she said. “They both gave me advice on with how to cope with that and continue to be successful in my doctoral program.”
She hopes to help Nevada Promise scholarship recipients balance school and home lives. She explained, “those all too often blur, and I aim to help students navigate through anything that life might throw at them to ensure their success in college.”

Carolyn Wheeler is a leadership-oriented marketing and community development professional with over 20 years’ experience in strategic communications and branding and a proven track record in reinforcing corporate culture and employee engagement programs around corporate social responsibility programs.
“By participating in the Nevada Promise Scholarship program, I am not only making the difference in a student’s life but also for our community,” said Wheeler. “I was fortunate to have mentors throughout my life and I know the importance of having someone believe in you and guide you while sharing their perspective and experience. This program not only helps students learn about career paths it also shapes our future leaders.”
Wheeler currently serves as the Executive Director of the Downtown Vegas Alliance (DVA), a nonprofit organization that connects its members and downtown stakeholders to influence growth in the heart of Las Vegas. Carolyn’s role brings together businesses, government and community partners through thought leadership and collaboration to build awareness and drive the strategic direction for the organization and the downtown Las Vegas community. Under her leadership the DVA has grown in its membership and influence and has become a leading resource to businesses trying to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to this role, she was the Director of Philanthropy and Corporate Social Responsibility Marketing for Caesar’s Entertainment in Las Vegas. At Caesars Entertainment, she works to connect the dots between the company’s commitment to environmental and social sustainability with internal and external audiences to help stakeholders understand the impact that the company truly makes. And as the Director of the Caesars Foundation, she worked to develop integrated relationships with community partners across the enterprise to increase the value of financial contributions by adding the power of Caesars’ volunteers and governance. During her tenure, Carolyn was awarded the Caesars Award of Excellence for Diversity and inspiring innovation and was part of a group selected as finalists for the 2016 Governor’s Point of Light Award for Corporate Volunteer Program.
Carolyn graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.A. in Sociology. She also participated in the Leadership Las Vegas program and is very involved in the Las Vegas community serving on numerous non-profit boards and advisory committees including the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism, YMCA, United Way of Southern Nevada, UCLA Alumni Association, National Charity League and Family to Family Connection. In her free time, Carolyn enjoys cooking, reading and traveling, especially to great surfing destinations with her daughter Lindsay.
