CSN Classified Employee of the Month- September 2022- Miriam Ruiz

Miriam Ruiz has been a member of the CSN family for over 20 years.  She is known for her dedication to a job well done and her ability to implement CSN policies and procedures to provide exceptional support to CSN students, faculty and staff.

During her time at CSN Miriam has taken great care to understand her department rules, guidelines and work equipment. Her department receives regular praise for her professionalism and ability to be accountable for here finished work product.  And, she has received recognition for her steadfast support of CSN Connections, Graduation and Technology Fairs.

AFA Employee of the Month – September 2022-Santiago De La Torre

Santiago De La Torre has been with CSN Academic Advising since 2014. He is a proud UNLV alumnus and served with the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Clark High School. He is originally from California but has called Southern Nevada home for over thirty years. He enjoys spending quality time with his daughter who is a graduate from UNR, and son who is an avid Star Wars fan.

Santiago is very grateful to be in a career which allows him the opportunity to help and guide a student’s goals and dreams while understanding every experience is unique and invigorating. He works with an outstanding team of committed individuals and takes great delight in learning new things from them every single day.

Classified Employee of the Month- August 2022- Cristy Neff

Cristy Neff is an Administrative Assistant II for the Applied Technologies Department on the Western campus. She is well known for her infectious positive attitude and her willingness to step in when extra help is needed. She is described by her colleagues as extremely dedicated to the CSN mission of enabling our students and communities to achieve, succeed and prosper.

Neff travels among campuses to provide assistance to CSN students and instructors and often completes tasks before she is asked. She gladly accepts new responsibilities and seeks opportunities to cross-train on duties outside her normal scope of work.

Her commitment to service excellence is notable and she believes in the value of building personal relationships to offer better service.

AFA Employee of the Month August 2022- Denesha Moore

Denesha Moore is a CSN-UNLV Alumna, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated,  The Society Inc., as well as Top Ladies of Distinction Inc. She was a International Academic Advisor and ESL Instructor in Baltimore, MD before joining the CSN Academic Advising team three and a half years ago.

The self-proclaimed “former military brat” enjoys seeing students overcome obstacles to achieve both personal and educational goals.  She loves culture, travel, tea and community service.

Classified Employee of the Month- July 2022- Rosaura Ortega

Rosaura Ortega is a Administrative Assistant I for the Centers for Academic Success on the CSN Charleston campus. She is described as a model employee by her colleague Joe Hicks and has the ability to maintain an upbeat, positive attitude during the uncertainty and challenges the community has experienced since the COVID-19 pandemic.

She goes above and beyond her duties to meet the evolving needs of CSN students and staff. Ms. Ortega is known to seek knowledge and request additional training to better herself and make her working environment positive for those around her. Her attention to detail is outstanding and she serves at the point of contact for her department with the Disability Resource Center, ensuring that all DRC session are scheduled in advance.

Her positive attitude and focus on CSN students helped her department pivot to an completely online service model in seven working days at the onset of the pandemic. Her ability to go above and beyond expectations has been demonstrated time and again. She is an exceptional asset to her team.

Classified Employee of the Month – June 2022- Derek Landers

Derek Landers is an Electrician II in the Technology Services & Facilities department on the CSN Charleston campus. His positive attitude and composure under pressure are exemplary and he manages change with ease.

Derek maintains multiple certifications to perform his duties at CSN and continuously pursues opportunities to expand his professional knowledge base. “He has been with CSN less than five years and in that time, he has earned an associate’s degree directly related to his position at the college,” wrote Mary Calabray in the nomination. “He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree and has also completed two national engineering certifications in the process.”

Derek’s passion for the CSN Students First philosophy is demonstrated by his commitment to the safety of CSN students, faculty and staff. His professionalism is second to none and his co-workers note his dedication to his role. “He makes himself available outside of normal business hours when needed to ensure that projects are completed in a timely matter with minimal disruption to the campus community.”

Dr. Daniel Alvarado, Interim Associate Vice President for the North Las Vegas Campus

Dr. Daniel Alvarado is a student development practitioner with over 20 years in various student affairs administrative roles. He will now serve as the Interim Campus Associate Vice President for the North Las Vegas Campus. Daniel will oversee Academic Advising, Campus Life, NV Promise, and Student Conduct. He previously served as Director of counseling and disability services at CSN. In addition, he worked at the North Carolina Community College System Office as Associate Director for Student Services and at Vance-Granville Community College as Director for Counseling and Disability Services. Daniel has also served as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor, a bilingual customer support representative with Social Security Administration, and Coordinator of the NC JobLink Career Center.

Dr. Alvarado earned his Ed.D. in Higher Education Executive Leadership from Wingate University, a master’s degree in counseling from North Carolina Central University, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Wayland Baptist University, and an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force. In addition, Daniel is a military veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.

Dr. Rebecca Gates, Administrator in Charge for the Henderson Campus

Dr. Rebecca Gates has been appointed Administrator in Charge for the Henderson campus. She previously served as Interim Associate Vice President for the Henderson Campus. A recent graduate of Leadership Henderson, Dr. Gates works to build upon existing relationships and leverage new opportunities within the Henderson service region.

With over 20 years’ professional experience in progressive levels of scope and supervision within higher education, focusing on both student and academic affairs, Dr. Gates work seeks to collaboratively create seamless learning environments that encourage student success. Dr. Gates’ research agenda focuses on the intersection of student access and success. As such, her research projects have been focused on issues of campus climate and institutional culture at federally designated Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

Dr. Gates earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, holds a Master of Science in Counseling and Student Personnel Services from Oklahoma State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Sam Houston State University. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, traveling, and the arts.

AFA Employee of the Month – July 2022- Roberta Palomo

Roberta Palomo

Roberta Palomo has been with CSN since 2018 and currently serves as the Mentoring and Services Coordinator with the Nevada Promise Scholarship program at the Henderson Campus. In her role, she engages with and connects students and staff with the campus community through the scholarship program’s emphasis on mentoring and community service. Roberta has worked in higher education for over 15 years with a focus on creating opportunities to ease the level of access and transition to higher education for students.

Khrys FuQua’, MBA, PhD, Associate Vice President, Charleston campus

Inclusive excellence driven, student centered, campus focused, and community oriented are the four main principles that drive the pursuits of Dr. Khrys FuQua’. He has been the founder and leader of numerous inaugural Academic Services, Diversity, Student Life/Experience and Multicultural offices, centers and organizations.

“Dr. K” as he is affectionately known, has served in a variety of progressive roles on collegiate campuses and within the business and industry sectors, both nationally and internationally.  Over the course of his career, he has held various progressive academic, diversity, multicultural, and student affairs post at institutions such as: the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, Louisiana State University, Southern University, The University of Tennessee and Fort Valley State University, just to name a few. Intriguingly, he was a food service staff member, then a student, a campus supervisor, then ultimately a senior administrator and professor.

Continuing his passion for student engagement, development, support, academic achievement, and historically underserved, marginalized and underrepresented populations, Dr. K is the former lead diversity official and head of academic and student service units at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a non-profit focused on serving Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) and Underrepresented Minority (URM) students and their families in inner cities.

Dr.K earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the Louisiana State University and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with focuses on: higher education administration, organizational development, diversity and academic & student affairs leadership. He also holds a Master of Business Administration gained by attending both the University of Nevada – Las Vegas and Delaware State University.

His research focuses intensely on: academic success, diversity, student development & engagement/support, retention-centered services & programing, achieving inclusive excellence, multicultural affairs, equity, access, and community partnerships and development.

Dr. K has consistently shared that one of his main priorities as he joins the College of Southern Nevada is to aid in the defining and launching of new initiatives for the continued growth of recruitment and retention to completion of our diverse student body in all programs, while offering an innovative approach to student support, diversity, faculty, staff, senior leaders and our local community.

His Motto:

“SUCCESS is not measured by what YOU have done for YOU, but what YOU have EMPOWERED others to do through what YOU say and do.”
