Thousands of books are available to families, children who need them
LAS VEGAS, June 14, 2016 – College of Southern Nevada students this week will give away several thousand books they’ve gathered to help create home libraries.
“Literacy is vital to the development of healthy learning habits in children,” said Pattie Thomas, CSN sociology instructor and faculty advisor to the Living Sociology Club. “We know that children and young adults who choose to read and who read for pleasure not only read better, but develop skills and habits that enhance their education for the rest of their lives. Independent literacy promotes critical thinking and improves life chances.”
The Samuel L. Smith Memorial Independent Literacy Day event honors Smith, long-time owner of Native Son Bookstore, and a local firefighter. He became a local icon locally before his death in 2015. The educational foundation formed in his memory is a co-sponsor of the event.
The giveaway is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at the June Whitley Student Lounge on CSN’s Cheyenne campus. Plans include children’s activities, a poetry table, book readings and more.
Up 10 books will be given to each person on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is free and open to the public. No age limits and books at all levels of reading, both fiction and non-fiction will be available.
