CSN Celebrates its 50th Commencement Ceremony

The College of Southern Nevada will graduate its largest class ever at its 50th annual commencement ceremony May 16 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
A record 4,298 graduates are eligible to receive their degrees and certificates, according to preliminary data. Official numbers for spring 2022 will be available once grades are final. In the last decade, CSN has seen more than 25,000 students earn their degrees and certificates and go on to fuel the growth and diversification of the Southern Nevada economy.

We are excited to welcome Gov. Steve Sisolak, who will join college officials, Student Commencement Speaker Kesha Westbrooks, CSN Professor Emerita Barbara Agonia, a founding faculty of the College, and a video message from U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, in addressing the graduates.

More than one-third of the students in this year’s graduating class are the first in their families to earn a college degree. In addition, one-third of the graduates are Hispanic. More than 90 percent of CSN’s graduates remain in Nevada after graduation, electing to either continue their education by transferring to a four-year institution or join the workforce and fuel the region’s economy.

Meet the Graduates

Kesha Westbrooks was chosen as this year’s Student Commencement Speaker. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in social work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with plans to apply for its advanced-standing Master’s in social work program. She is honored to be chosen as CSN’s 50th anniversary student commencement speaker.
Kesha, a veteran as well as a cancer and stroke survivor, has overcome many challenges to achieve her educational goals. She was introduced to her life’s new purpose by CSN’s Prison Education Program while incarcerated for a financial crime. Upon her release in 2019, Kesha enrolled in on-campus classes. She credits the Prison Education Program with giving her hope during the darkest time in her life, and actively advocates for it on and off campus.
Zachary Johnigan served as 2021-22 Student Body President on the ASCSN (Associated Students of The College of Southern Nevada). Zachary, who will attend UNLV in the fall, seeks to become a pillar in his community by being a shining example of what dedication to improving oneself can do. He chose CSN because of the flexibility the college offers, as well as the Students First philosophy that guides the college leadership.
During his tenure, he worked closely with the CSN administration to help guide students through the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure that student services went uninterrupted.
Angelique Britt has been a member of the CSN family for more than twenty-four years. She first enrolled as a part-time student en route to an Associate of Science and has supported all three main campuses during her tenure at CSN. In 2019 she enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in project management to continue to grow and pursue new opportunities with Digital Experience Services at CSN. She now manages enterprise level projects such as the opening of the Betty Engelstad School of Health Sciences Building, public works projects and the Technology For Students Laptop distributions. If she could give her younger self a piece of advice it would be to not wait to pursue her degree. Angelique’s support system includes a long list of colleagues, leaders and family members, including her husband whom she met at CSN. She looks forward to walking during the 2022 Commencement ceremonies, taking some well-deserved time off after graduation and eventually pursuing a master’s degree in IT project management.
