Information on CSN’s Budget Reduction Plan

Dear CSN Family,

Yesterday, the Board of Regents approved initial budget reduction proposals from each of the state’s higher education institutions.

As you can see in our initial proposal, CSN, like our sister institutions, will absorb cuts of 4 percent this year and as much as 14 percent next year. We have proposed to accomplish this through a variety of means including the use of federal stimulus dollars, a hiring freeze and reductions in travel and operating budgets. Cuts at the highest proposed levels could result in temporary student surcharges and professional staff furloughs. Layoffs are not part of our proposal.

While these proposed cuts are serious, I remain optimistic about our ability to protect our students success mission, our accreditation and shared governance standards, and our ability to perform essential business functions required to do business, including specialized areas such as financial aid and contract compliance.

While it is early in the process and there are many details left to work out, I have already formed a Budget Response Team to ensure we are true to our principle of shared governance, so our faculty, staff and students will have input into the process. All stakeholders will have a seat at the table to ensure that necessary sacrifices are equitable.

Please know that no matter the level of cuts, there will be unavoidable impacts on the level of services we can provide our students. I have confidence in our ability to collectively step up and help close those gaps and I know we will. I truly believe that our commitment to our students will motivate us to stay the course during these difficult times.

There is also reason for optimism because enrollment at CSN and community colleges across the nation increases during economic downturns. A record number of Southern Nevada residents who are currently unemployed or displaced will turn to CSN for education and retraining opportunities. I know we will be ready to do our part to jump start the regional economy and equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed and prosper.

In closing, I want to remind you of our Virtual Town Hall meeting next week, where you will have an opportunity to hear more details and ask questions about our proposal. Thank you all and have a wonderful Easter weekend.

Stay Safe and God Bless.

Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Please see the message below from University Police Services Southern Command:

Dear CSN Community,

Within the past 24 hours, CSN has been informed that a member of the Water Street facility, which includes but is not limited to the Southern Desert Regional Police Academy, community has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

The individual was last on campus on March 23, 2020 and has not returned to CSN since. The individual was confirmed as positive for COVID-19 on April 6, 2020. The individual is recovering at home and is following protocols set by state health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When an individual is confirmed to have COVID-19, the Southern Nevada Health District determines who they may have had close contact with and guidance is provided directly to those individuals.

The Southern Nevada Health District emphasizes that those most at risk from COVID-19 include people who have had daily repeated and prolonged exposure. The college is sending this notification out of an abundance of caution because the individual visited a public space on campus March 23, 2020. Public health officials maintain the risk is low for people who have had brief contact with an infected individual.

We ask the CSN community to continue following protocols for prevention, maintain social distancing, be aware of symptoms of COVID-19, and seek medical care when it is needed.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a rapidly evolving situation in Nevada and throughout the country, and we will continue to share information specific to CSN through official channels, including www.csn.edu/coronavirus.

This notification complies with the requirements under the Clery Act.

Remote Learning To Continue Through June 30

Dear CSN Family,

In consideration of Gov. Steve Sisolak’s “Stay at Home” order issued today, as well as NSHE Chancellor Thom Reilly’s latest guidance, the College of Southern Nevada will remain in a remote learning environment through June 30. All CSN classes that are currently being conducted remotely will remain so for the duration of the spring semester.

All Summer 2020 classes will be conducted remotely through the duration of the first Summer session, and there will be no in-person classes during this time. During the second Summer session, CSN will assess the viability of delivering Career & Technical Education (CTE), Health Profession Clinicals, science labs, and other courses that may require face-to-face instruction and that can be delivered under the COVID-19 protocol.

The Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents is scheduled to meet next week to discuss issues surrounding the COVID-19 epidemic. You can see the agenda on NSHE’s website.

Please stay safe and as always, we will keep you updated as events develop.

Thank you.

April 1, 2020 Daily Chronicle

Dear CSN Family,

Today’s email update highlights important information from Student Affairs. As you know, I will bring you news every day from several critical divisions of the college such as Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Human Resources and Finance.

I’d like to start by noting that we are planning to hold Virtual Town Halls every week for the foreseeable future to help disseminate information and answer any questions our faculty, staff and students may have. We’ve scheduled this week’s faculty and staff town hall for tomorrow at 3 p.m. Please see our Newsroom blog post for more information about how you may participate.

The Student Affairs team has been hard at work to make sure our students come first during this crisis.

Only two days after we began remote instruction, the division implemented a daily metrics report for its units. This report captures data on several areas of student engagement, including the number of student interactions, the nature of these interactions, frequently asked student questions, actions taken to ensure two-way communications with team members, operational concerns, support requests and questions for senior leadership.

Each unit is developing fact sheets and FAQ lists for team members assigned to help students so they will have the correct answers close at hand. This data has been vital to helping inform our team to ensure we are responding to student problems or challenges to the best of our ability.

The division has also developed an online exit survey for students who have withdrawn from at least one class this semester. We expect this information will help identify to what extent the current crisis and remote learning environment may have contributed to the students’ decisions.

I want to end today’s message by acknowledging your hard work and commitment to putting our Students First in these difficult times. If you have not yet done so, please check out the online message board we created to highlight the many positive stories happening right now at CSN. Feel free to post your own story, too.

Thank you.

Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Dear CSN Family,

In the last 24 hours, CSN has learned that one of our students has tested positive for COVID-19. This is the first confirmed case at CSN. The student was last on the Charleston Campus on March 11, 2020 in Building K. The student is now self-quarantined and is following protocols set by state health officials and the CDC.

We are working closely with the Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance to address any issues that may arise. The Health District is contacting anyone who may have been exposed due to extended close contact with the patient and will determine if further testing is needed. Moreover, we will continue to follow the COVID –19 protocols set forth by the CDC to prevent spread of the disease. You can find information on how to stay safe on our website at www.csn.edu/coronavirus

We will continue to be fully transparent and keep you informed as part of the Clery Act requirements. We will share additional confirmed of any cases involving members of the CSN community at www.csn.edu/coronavirus/confirmed

I know that I join the entire CSN family in sending our best wishes and collective support for a quick recovery to our student. Please keep all of those across our community affected by the disease in your thoughts.
