Learn to write right

You know the drill by now, don’t you?

  • sign up for a class
  • check out the syllabus
  • note that you have a term paper due at the end of the semester
  • wait until the weekend before it’s due to start writing
  • panic

It doesn’t have to be like that, you know.

CSN's Writing Centers, located on all three campuses, are open every day but Sunday.

CSN’s Writing Centers, located on all three campuses, are open every day but Sunday.

CSN’s Writing Center can help. And not just at the last minute. Stop by early in the semester, even before you’ve started your paper. There are writing centers open on all three CSN campuses. They’re even open on Saturday.

Robyn Rohde, the center’s manager, noted that you don’t need an appointment, the help is free, and you can come back as many times as you want. The only qualification is that you be a CSN student.

“Students typically come in with a rough draft and they want help with the grammar,” Rohde said. “But we can help with so much more than that.”

The centers are staffed with people who know how to write. And writing is more than just getting there/their/they’re correct.

The center’s staff can help you come up with a topic, outlining and structuring your paper, and writing it. They can give you some basic help with research, too, though the folks over at the CSN Library are the research experts.

Some instructors require you to visit the writing center, so why not get going now? It can get really busy later in the semester. Last semester, the three centers had more than 11,000 visits by students.

Knowing how to write well is important, and not just while you’re in college.

“Writing is so crucial for most of our students to achieve their career goals,” Rohde said. “In the job market, you have to communicate effectively, and that includes writing.”
