Inside CSN

Tyrone Thompson Student Union

I am proud to let you know that the Board of Regents unanimously and enthusiastically recently approved our naming request for the student union on our North Las Vegas Campus to be named after Tyrone Thompson, a Nevada Assemblyman who passed away earlier this year. There was no stronger advocate for education in our Legislature. Thompson was a longtime CSN supporter and a true believer in the Students First philosophy guiding all of us here. I remember him greeting CSN students warmly into his office when we were in Carson City earlier this year. We feel privileged to make this happen in his honor. Please be on the lookout for more details about a dedication ceremony soon.

Fall 2019 Convocation & Adjunct Impact

This is a reminder that this year’s Adjunct Impact Conference is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 17. Adjunct faculty can register now at Our State of the College & Fall Convocation Kickoff event will be held Monday, August 19, followed by a week of professional development opportunities before classes begin on August 26. Mark your calendars now!

Join the Welcome Back Crew

Be sure to volunteer to welcome returning students back to campus and to help new students navigate their first couple of days on campus. Once again, CSN will have teams of people on each campus to help students find where they need to go and connect them with whatever student services they may need. This Welcome Back Crew has become a semi-annual tradition at the college.

Coyote Spirit

I am pleased to announce that this fall, we will roll out a new school spirit initiative, called #CoyoteThursdays. We will be encouraging faculty, staff and students to wear their CSN gear every Thursday and to post selfies or photos on social media accounts using the hashtag #CoyoteThursdays. Students who participate in this program will be able to earn small prizes by visiting one of our student government offices – which will be located in the new student unions – and sharing their post. Prizes may include doughnuts, T-shirts or other small gifts. I hope our faculty and staff will not only participate in this initiative by sharing photos of their own, but also encourage their students to do so as well. Faculty and staff without social media can email their photos to the marketing and communications department so they can be shared widely on our social sites.

CSN Foundation

I want to express my personal thanks to Kemp Broadcasting and David Wilson's Toyota of Las Vegas, who have donated $38,000 to the CSN Foundation to support student scholarships since 2016. It’s donors like this who support our Students First agenda and help to ensure that our students graduate, complete, transfer and prosper. Pictured here are General Manager Scott Redden and Andrea Howell of David Wilson's Toyota of Las Vegas touring the automotive program on the North Las Vegas Campus with Program Director John Ventura.

CSN Connections

I am really looking forward to the CSN Connections events this year, which for the first time will be centered around our new student unions! The events are scheduled for September 9, 11 and 12. Please note that due to a scheduling conflict the Henderson Campus event will take place on Monday this semester, rather than Tuesday as it has been in past semesters. Spread the word to as many students as you can about these events. They’ll have an opportunity to meet faculty and staff, learn about the large variety of services offered at CSN, and forge a stronger connection with the college – all of which makes them more likely to succeed.

Nevada Promise Academy

I want to congratulate the Nevada Promise Team on a successful Nevada Promise Academy this summer. One hundred forty incoming CSN students were the beneficiaries of this extraordinary six-week program designed to help them transition into college life. All the students had completed the requirement for the Nevada Promise Scholarship. In the summer program, the students were able to earn a five-credit English course and underwent an intensive math preparation seminar. Shellie Keller with the Centers for Academic Success reports that student test results at the end of the program were dramatically better than those at the beginning, with a significant number of students testing into higher math classes. Through the program, students also picked up leadership skills, learned about resources at CSN and were treated to guest speakers. Thank you to all those who made this program such a success. It was truly an example of putting students first.

NJCAA All-Academic Athletes

I am thrilled to announce that 22 CSN student athletes were named as NJCAA All-Academic this year! Two made the first team, seven made the second team and 13 students made the third team. I am extremely proud of our athletes, our athletic staff, our coaches and our athletic director, Dexter Irvin, for this amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to all.
