Will the Affordable Care Act Create New Jobs in Healthcare?

Silver State Health Insurance Exchange Executive Director to be guest speaker

LAS VEGAS, November 7, 2013 – Medical leaders will gather at the College of Southern Nevada’s Ralph & Betty Engelstad School of Health Sciences on Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to discuss how business and education can better prepare students for emerging jobs in healthcare.

Guest speaker, Jon M. Hager, executive director of the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, will discuss the challenges and opportunities local providers and students can expect as Nevada begins to implement the Affordable Care Act. CSN will also provide tours of the Ralph & Betty Engelstad Health Sciences Building and guests can view hands-on demonstrations of cutting-edge technology in the nursing, clinical laboratory sciences, cardiorespiratory sciences, emergency medical services, surgical technology and other important health care education programs.

The Affordable Care Act could have considerable impact in Nevada, a state which has one of the highest rates of uninsured residents in the nation. A March 2013 University of Nevada, School of Medicine report found that Nevada ranks 51st in the United States for the number of general surgeons, 46th for primary-care physicians and 40th for obstetricians and gynecologists. As more Nevadans become eligible for healthcare services, the need for skilled and highly trained health services workers will grow.

“There are currently more than 1,200 health sciences students, who earned associate and baccalaureate degrees, certificates of achievement and certificates of completion last academic year,” said Patricia Castro, dean of the CSN Ralph & Betty Engelstad School of Health Sciences. “The employment outlook for healthcare careers is very promising and we are poised to make a significant contribution to Southern Nevada’s workforce.”

The Ralph & Betty Engelstad School of Health Sciences offers Bachelor of Science degrees in dental hygiene and clinical laboratory science, 12 associate degree, 11 certificates of achievement and 15 certificates of completion programs. More information is at http://sites.csn.edu/health.

This event has been organized by the CSN Foundation, the non-profit organization founded in 1982, exclusively to support the College of Southern Nevada community.
