CSN Receives $100,000 Air Conditioning Equipment Gift to Benefit Cheyenne Campus and Expand HVAC Program

CSN Foundation Dedicates Classroom to Daikin Applied, Norman S. Wright Mechanical Equipment Corporation and alumnus Chris Deangelis in October 30 Ceremony

LAS VEGAS, October 29, 2013 – The air conditioning and technology classroom at the College of Southern Nevada’s Cheyenne campus receives a new name at 6 p.m. on Oct. 30. The CSN Foundation is dedicating the room to Daikin Applied and Norman S. Wright Mechanical Equipment Corporation, along with a special memorial plaque for alumnus Chris Deangelis for his role in the $100,000 gift.

Deangelis, a City of Las Vegas air conditioning technician II, passed away prior to the donation completion. He is being recognized for his advocacy and contributions to CSN. He played an integral part in connecting the parties for the chiller equipment donation that will be used to expand the air conditioning technology curriculum to include central plant operations.

The chiller unit at Cheyenne campus needed to be replaced and a plan was created to provide CSN facilities with the donated Daikin chiller. This allowed the existing CSN chiller to be used for student installation and repair skills training. Dennis Soukup, department chair for applied technologies at CSN, and Dennis Westbrook, sales engineer at Norman S. Wright Mechanical Equipment Corporation, and a representative for Daikin Applied played a role in the equipment donation. The chiller had been used in Daikin test labs and the unit came outfitted with a R-134a refrigerant, which is more affordable and environmentally friendly. The chiller allows CSN to merge central plants and make the HVAC system more efficient by shutting down the other plants in the winter months to conserve power.

“This is a marvelous gift from Daikin Applied,” CSN Foundation Chair Peter O’Neill said. “The chiller improves CSN’s energy efficiency and is a cost saver for the Cheyenne campus, located in North Las Vegas. This in-kind gift is a perfect example of how collaboration with business, faculty, students and the college can provide valuable resources and support. Thanks to the collaboration of Daikin Applied, Norman S. Wright Mechanical Equipment Corporation, CSN Facilities Associate Vice President Sherri Payne and faculty at the School of Advanced and Applied Technologies — we now have a valuable cost-saving resource for CSN and an effective teaching tool for our students.”

“At Daikin Applied we are committed to training and education,” Bill Dietrich, Product General Manager, Chillers at Daikin Applied said. “Knowing this donation would free up another chiller that could help train students, made this decision an easy one for the Daikin Applied team.”

The dedication will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m., following by the ceremony at 6 p.m. and tours of the central plant at 6:30 p.m.
