What do librarians do all summer? Since the library stays open, we are still here to help students and work on projects, but that doesn’t mean we don’t also have fun!
How I Spent My Summer “Vacation”
Stephanie Espinoza, eLearning Librarian
At the end of June, I planned and baked for two bridal showers (it’s wedding season!) while also helping students in an online summer Marketing class. I recommended library databases for market research and credible sources on company CEOs. I also assisted the students with formatting and citation requirements for their papers using our library’s online APA guide. In between baking heart-shaped scones.
On summer weekends, I had the opportunity to attend two amazing conventions. The first was the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con (that’s me as Piper next to a power armor cosplay made of foam!). Then later in the month I attended the Leviosa Con for Harry Potter fans and fantasy literature buffs. Not only did I witness some incredible cosplay, but I also got to learn about young adult books and writing for publication—some of my interests outside the library.
July was a busy time at work for meetings to plan the fall semester and create a library customer service training. Sound boring? We laughed through the whole second half of the training day as librarians and staff acted out real-life scenarios through role-playing. I think many of my coworkers deserve Academy Awards for their portrayals of students!
What else did I do this summer? I worked on a grant, recorded database statistics, and met with professors to collaborate on committee projects. But I also played Pokemon Go, Fallout 4, and Life is Strange.
And sometimes, the best way to spend summer nights is just eating popcorn and watching Netflix with friends. Though summer is drawing to a close already, I plan to do this throughout the Fall too!
